How to get rid of carpet stains

Date: 05-05-2019

1.  The most important fact to establish when looking to get rid of a carpet stain is to identify the cause of the stain, for example, look, feel, and smell. Some stains are especially difficult to remove, especially if they have been left for a period. Coffee, red wine and dye are a challenge.

2.   Remove excess soil or particles so cleaning chemical can get to the carpet fibres.

3.  Always pre-test the cleaning product on the carpet in a small area where possible.

4.  If the identification of the stain cannot be made then use a general spot cleaner. for example, Unbelievable, Conquer, Mr Nomarks carpet master, and SoyClean (a vegetable-based eco-friendly & biodegradable). It may be necessary to then try cleaning chemicals that are acidic or alkaline.

 5.  Importantly apply spotter with a clean white cloth and gently dab the stain working from the outside towards the center. The white cloth will reveal if colour loss is occurring from the cleaning agent. NEVER use a red cloth as red cloths are prone to releasing their own red dye! Pat and blot up the loosened stain with toweling..  Rinse the area with water after the stain has been removed.

7.  Repeat steps 5 and 6 for stubborn stains.

8.  When dry, restore the carpet pile to its original shape by vacuuming or lightly brush comb the carpet.
